Level 3 football: SPASH stopped in multiple ways by Appleton North PDF Print E-mail

APPLETON -- For the first time since 2005, Stevens Point Area Senior High football will not reach Level 4, or the semifinals, of the WIAA Division 1 tournament. The same team that derailed it then, Appleton North, struck again.

Winning 14-0 over SPASH, the Lightning now advance to a new level in its program's history, its first Level 4 game, and in doing so had to push the Panthers to the back. But SPASH did not go down minus a fight, it would put on a strong defensive performance, among the best it had all season. It was the type of performance that allows a loss to sink in quicker, and deeper, than normal.

"The hardest thing to stomach right now is to know that you have to go home when you have a defense like we have," SPASH coach Pete McAdams said.

North's previous low in points was 12, scored in Week 2, it turned the ball over twice and nearly did so two other times and star running back Steve Lichtfuss was held to his season low in yardage, but still it goes on to face Menominee Falls on Friday for a chance to play for it all at Camp Randall Stadium.

"Our offense kept making plays, we knew sooner or later they'd break through," Appleton North coach Rob Salm said. "That's what a hard-fought quarterfinal game is."

The Lightning made the majority of big plays on the night but it fought hard to survive in the game's first half, completing only two drives longer than three plays and giving the ball up twice. Thing was, SPASH didn't do any better, its only first half first-down came off a penalty. A concious effort to move the ball in the air, namely to top reciever Dan Desorcy, flat failed. SPASH completed none of 12 first-half pass attempts. The game was tied 0-0 at halftime.

"We started off pretty bad," said running back Joey Mathe, who ran for 33 yards on nine carries. "We got set up in bad positions so many times."

The Lightning's top offensive weapon, Lichtfuss, was the difference with 116 yards on 18 carries, but it didn't look that way through most of the game. Most of his yardage came on a backbreaking 67-yard run with just under four minutes left in the fourth quarter, that play was set up by Appleton North blocking a field goal attempt by SPASH that would have cut a 7-0 deficit to 7-3. Earlier, Lichtfuss scored from 12 yards out, ending a 12 play, 74 yard drive that started off the third quarter.

Prep football: SPASH expecting the unexpected PDF Print E-mail

To expect the unexpected in the Division 1 Level 3 football game between Appleton North and Stevens Point Area Senior High may be too much to say, but fans shouldn't just expect the expected either.

To put it in simpler terms, don't be surprised if the normally grounded Appleton North (11-0) offense takes to the air against SPASH (11-0) Saturday afternoon in Appleton.

"They're going to run the ball, they're going to grind it out, but they're also going to throw the ball," SPASH coach Pete McAdams said.

Now, this is McAdams speaking on a team that only threw two times against Oshkosh North in its Level 2 win, but in that game like in every other this year the Lightning controlled the game mainly through its run attack, led by powerful feature back Steve Lichtfuss, who has run for 2,143 yards already in 2009.

The formula for North so far this year: get the lead, grind the ball (and the opposing defense) out, take home a win.

"They can throw the ball when needed," McAdams said. "They haven't really needed to throw the ball much this year."

Of course, the Panthers look to exert more pressure onto North than any other opponent has so far. SPASH's chance of making that happen start with their run attack, which always stands a chance of controlling the game because of its disciplined front line.

"In the past it seemed to have been how Austin Sikorski goes, so goes the SPASH offense," McAdams said. "Really right now I think its more how our offensive line goes, so goes the SPASH offense."

Prep football: Another chance to for Sikorski shine? PDF Print E-mail

To see Austin Sikorski push through a seven- or eight-man front and break free for a 20- or 30-yard run in spite of the defense focusing completely on stopping him is a study in determination.

On Wednesday, with a cast and support covering the entire bottom half of his left leg and with crutches holding him up, the leading rusher for Stevens Point Area Senior High still is holding out for a chance to dazzle fans once more before his high school career ends.

Last week, the crushing news surfaced that the senior running back had broke a bone in his left foot and he likely would lose the rest of his season after undergoing surgery on Friday. But that procedure, which included putting a supportive screw into the foot, may be the key to a quick recovery.

Sikorski, who has played through injuries for weeks even before suffering the break against Oshkosh West in SPASH's WIAA Level 1 playoff game, said there is a small chance that he may put his number 28 jersey on once again should the Panthers go far enough.

"We have a great team with me and a great team without me," Sikorski said. "I think they'll succeed, it's not going to change anything, none of the goals have changed. Who knows, we win two games, I could come back," Sikorski said.

STEVENS POINT -- There wasn't much for Tyler Studinski to complain about Saturday night.

But looking at the scoreboard at Community Stadium and seeing an eight on the visitors side stuck in the craw of the Stevens Point Area Senior High defensive tackle a little bit.

That was about the only negative in an otherwise rock solid performance as SPASH remained alive with a convincing 28-8 win over Hudson in a Level 2 matchup.

Next up for the unbeaten Panthers (11-0) is a date at Appleton North (11-0) on Friday or Saturday at a time to be determined.
"I don't like there wasn't a zero up there against a team we feel like we dominated," said Studinski.

"It feels good to win. We're moving on to Level 3, baby."
On Halloween night, the Panthers showed off some special treats.
Without the presence of Austin Sikorski, who recently had surgery for a broken foot, Joey Mathe showed he more than an adequate replacement.

Here is a capsule look at the area Level 2 football games scheduled for Saturday. The cost of admission is $4.

Division 1

•Who: Hudson at SPASH, 6 p.m.

•Records: SPASH 10-0; Hudson 9-1

•Playoffs: SPASH def. Oshkosh West 52-27 in opening round; Hudson def. Wisconsin Rapids 21-6

•About the Panthers: The Panthers rolled up 363 yards on the ground in rolling past West on Tuesday. Senior running back Austin Sikorski, who has gained more than 1,400 yards, including 177 on 19 carries against West with four touchdowns, will miss the remainder of the playoffs after having surgery on a broken foot Wednesday.
"Obviously, the team feels real bad for Austin more than anything," SPASH coach Pete McAdams said. "I think our guys are mature enough that the kids understand we have a lot of guys and good athletes who now need to take on some added responsibilities, and do a little more to make up for the loss of Austin."
That means the running game will fall on Joey Mathe -- 76 yards on 13 attempts against West -- and bruising fullback Jake Tatro. SPASH will also need to see more production out of quarterback Alex Plaster on the ground and through the air.

•About the Raiders: Hudson is hoping the third time is the charm. This marks the third straight year SPASH and the Raiders have met in the WIAA playoffs, with the Panthers prevailing each of the last two seasons. Hudson's lone loss came at the hands of Superior 14-7 in Week 3. The Raiders' have not surrendered more than 14 points in any game this season. Quarterback Beau Hommes, who rushed for a pair of touchdowns, and halfback Andy Edholm (132 yards in Level 1) lead a two-headed ground attack. Hudson owns a pair of victories over Wisconsin Rapids (21-7 and 21-6).
